Wedding Day Pranks and Practical Jokes

MARCH 31, 2014 | BY MARTA 6

Practical jokes at a wedding are risky business. Tension is high, nerves are strained and you never know what hornet’s nest you might be stepping in to. On the other hand, a really great joke can help calm tensions and make for a memorable day. In honor of April Fool’s Day we asked some wedding professionals to share their stories of wedding day practical jokes.

Wedding planner Stephanie Eckweiler of The Finishing Touch tells of a couple who won a wedding from a contest, the catch being that it had to be planned in eight weeks. The groom took advantage of this rushed time frame to pull a prank on the officiant. He told the officiant that he had been too rushed and he wasn’t sure if they should go through with the wedding.

Pranking your officiant about cold feet is one thing, but planner Tracie Domino tells of a bride who had herself “checked in” at an airport on Facebook with the message, “I’m out of here” right before the wedding. Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques had a client who went one step farther. The bride did not show up at the altar, only to arrive via helicopter a few minutes later. The prank was especially effective because the groom was well known as being the more adventurous of the two.

Domino tells of another couple who decided to shock guests by having “She’s Having My Baby” as their first dance song (the bride was not pregnant).

DJ Mystical Michael (DJ Michael Swerdloff) helped a couple prank one of their groomsmen. The man apparently had a fear of public speaking and Swerdloff was instructed to hand him the mic after the Best Man and Maid of Honor toasts. Once he realized that it was a joke, he took it well.

Francesca DiSalvo-Follmer of Pure Luxe Bride remembers during the height of the “icing” craze a bride hiding a Smirnoff Ice in her garter. When the groom went to remove the garter he was “iced” forcing him to down the drink at the moment.

Several pros mentioned a wedding trend gaining in popularity that is almost a prank itself, the surprise wedding. A couple invite guests to what they assume is a normal party only to have it turn out to be a wedding.

One of the keys to pulling of a successful wedding day prank is to have the help of a wedding planner or other professional. Not only will the professional be able to make sure things go smoothly, he or she can give you a gentle heads up if what you’re suggesting is a really bad idea.

What do you think? Would you take well to a prank at a wedding? What if you were the bride or groom?

Fun Rhode Island Wedding at Nauvoo Grill Club

This past Saturday we performed as DJ and MC for a fun Rhode Island Wedding at The Nauvoo Grill Club in Fair Haven, New Jersey. If you have never been there, you are in for a treat! It was our first time as DJ and MC at Nauvoo Grill Club and they did a fantastic job. If you are looking for an excellent venue for your Wedding or Party, I invite you to explore their website and look around. They have great atmosphere, a cool upper deck, awesome food and a professional, but laid back staff. We DJ many Weddings and Parties in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area and we were very impressed.

The Bride and Groom themselves must have put great thought into their choice of venue for their Wedding, because they were equally laid back, simple and great to work with. It fit them perfectly and it was such a nice, simple and elegant Wedding. The Bride looked fabulous and so did the Groom for that matter. Their friends and family had a great time and enjoyed everything. The music for the Cocktail Hour consisted mostly of soft Modern and Classic Rock with some new Top 40 mixed-in to make sure everybody was happy.

When most guests were finished with the quality buffet, a woman who identified herself as, “A sixty-two year old lady who wants to dance and party!”, came up and asked requested us to play some Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez to get the dancing started. Five minutes later the dance floor was packed and stayed that way till the end! We played DJ Music for dancing for young and old, mixing Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley with Neyo, Jackson 5 and Bruce Springsteen, the latter being the Groom’s request.

It is so satisfying as a Rhode Island Wedding DJ to participate in such an excellent Wedding with the Bride, Groom and their guests. It was so much fun with no cheesy music or elements, a great simple and elegant Wedding on the Jersey Shore, less than three blocks from water.

Louchie Lou and Michie One Rich Girl

Louchie Lou and Michie One Rich Girl is a song by the female English duo Louchie Lou & Michie One, released as a single in 1993 from their 1995 album I’ll Be Free. It was inspired by the song “If I Were a Rich Man” from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. In 2004, for the tenth anniversary of the famous reggae song, it was remade into a new song by Gwen Stefani featuring Eve on her debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (2004).

Including her work with No Doubt, Stefani has sold more than forty million albums worldwide.  She won the World’s Best-Selling New Female Artist at the World Music Awards 2005.  Billboard magazine ranked Stefani the fifty-fourth most successful artist and thirty-seventh most successful Hot 100 artist of the 2000–09 decade.

The Original Fiddler On The Roof (Film Version)

For those whom are not familiar with the theatrical production of Fiddler On The Roof, here is the film description from IMDB.

“At the beginning of the twentieth century, Jews and Orthodox Christians live in the little village of Anatevka in the pre-revolutionary Russia of the Czars. Among the traditions of the Jewish community, the matchmaker arranges the match and the father approves it. The milkman Reb Tevye is a poor man that has been married for twenty-five years with Golde and they have five daughters. When the local matchmaker Yente arranges the match between his older daughter Tzeitel and the old widow butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye agrees with the wedding. However Tzeitel is in love with the poor tailor Motel Kamzoil and they ask permission to Tevye to get married that he accepts to please his daughter. Then his second daughter Hodel (Michele Marsh) and the revolutionary student Perchik decide to marry each other and Tevye is forced to accept. When Perchik is arrested by the Czar troops and sent to Siberia, Hodel decides to leave her family and homeland and travel to Siberia to be with her beloved Perchik….

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home

A couple of weeks ago, I was MC & DJ for a Wedding in Westchester County, NY. The Bride and Groom had chosen Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home as a Bridal Party Dance Song after their First Dance. It was so much fun! Everybody of all ages ended up dancing, whistling and singing on the dance floor! It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had as a professional Wedding DJ in quite a while. I will recommend this song for future events now that I know even folks that are not interested in this particular musical style will be able to join in and have fun.

How Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home Came To Be

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American band led by Alex Ebert, who is also a vocalist of the power pop group Ima Robot. Their first show as a full band was played July 18, 2007 at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Their first full-length recording, Up from Below, was released digitally on July 7, 2009 and physically on July 14, 2009 on Community Records. Their second full-length album, Here, was released on May 29, 2012.

Ebert began work on a book about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe after breaking up with his girlfriend, joining a 12-step program for addiction, and moving into a house with his lifelong friend Nicholas Raymond Kellen. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos outside a downtown Los Angeles cafe.

I am titanium

you shoot me down,

but I won’t fall

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium is a ballad which draws from the genres of pophouse and urbandance. The song’s lyrics are about inner strength. Sia’s vocals on David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium received comparisons to those by Fergie and the song was also musically compared to Coldplay‘s work. Critics were positive towards the song and noted it as one of the standout tracks from Nothing but the Beat. “Titanium” attained top 10 positions in several major music markets, including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number one, becoming Guetta’s fifth number-one single on the chart and Sia’s first. The song’s accompanying music video premiered on December 21, 2011 but does not feature appearances by Guetta and Sia. Instead, the video focuses on a young boy, played by actor Ryan Lee, with supernatural powers. Along with other songs, David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium was pulled from radio stations in the US after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young

One of the marvels of the technological age in the music industry is the various ways a song can become a hit. Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young went from #48 to #3 on Billboard HOT 100 this week, it is the highest ranking yet for the group Fun..  Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young has been featured on TV shows “Chuck” and “Glee” and was still not a hit. It took a Chevy commercial during the Super Bowl with Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young for this song to receive the notoriety it deserves.

I also find it entertaining that folks insult each other over how they found out about the artist or song. To me, the source is not important. If you like a song or found it increased the enjoyment of a TV show, movie or commercial, good for you! Music has the magic of shifting anything into something special with the right song. This is the job of a good professional DJ. We take traditional occasions and turn them into a lasting memory and an event to talk about with excitement. Music can do that.

Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young is a fun video and creative in its presentation. I appreciate the unique story they tell in the video, while continuing to hold the energy of the Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young. Have fun.

Roy Orbison Pretty Woman

Roy Orbison was one of our great voices in pop music. He grew-up listening to and playing Rockabilly and Country and Western in Texas.  Between 1960-1964, Orbison had 22 singles place on Billboards Top 40. He was elected into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Bruce Springsteen was his presenter. Roy Orbison Pretty Woman reached #1 on Billboard and stayed there for three weeks.

Roy Orbison Pretty Woman Music Video

Roy Orbison Pretty Woman is a great song that has been covered by many artists and still is today. Roy Orbison Pretty Woman shows up in films including Dumb and Dumber and Pretty Woman, as well as a Van Halen cover in Weird Science. Roy Orbison Pretty Woman has even made its appearance in several Bollywood films.

Roy made a comeback when teaming up with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne to form the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. He died of a heart attack soon after that. His first wife and two of his sons died of separate accidents.

Five years after its release, in 1969, the single was awarded gold record by RIAA. Orbison posthumously won the 1991Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his live recording of the song on his HBO television special Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night. In 1999, the song was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and was named one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #222 on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Believe it or not, I had the “45” of Roy Orbison Pretty Woman when I was a kid. It was not a hit any more by that time though, but as a child that did not matter to me. Now I still play Roy Orbison Pretty Woman as a professional DJ.

will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever

It is hard to imagine that these three much celebrated artists could somehow all record together on the same song, will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever.

Apparently Mick Jagger is ending the year strong between the Maroon 5 hit, “Moves Like Jagger” and his performance on will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever, somehow he is back in the limelight again. What may be more amazing is that he is sixty-eight years old! How has he lasted this long with the lifestyle he has chosen? Is it true that last year he was quoted saying that he has a daily meditation and Buddhist practice? Is that the source of his youthful existence? His short piece on will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever even sounds good.

will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever Ever Music Video

willl.i.am continues to find creative means for producing pop hits without following the typical prescriptions. He does things his own way and makes music that is completely will.i.am-ish, like will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever.

Critical Response to will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever

The song has received mixed reviews from music critics. Simon Vozick-Levinson wrote a mixed review for Rolling Stone, stating that on the single will.i.am “strews dodgy rhymes (“I woke up in the morning/Hard like morning wood in the morning”) over diamond-bright synths, while J. Lo handles the efficient hook. It all feels a bit perfunctory – except for Mick’s guest verse, a kitschy delight delivered in a “Midnight Rambler” snarl.

The website “DJ Booth” also gave to the song a mixed review, writing that “this tough-as-nails cut finds Will, “Audiobot” and Dallas Austin teaming up to craft a danceable synth-percussion beat to back the B.E.P.mastermind as he delivers his trademark blend of Auto-Tuned singing and guilty-pleasure punchline lyricism. After a tuneful guest verse from J-Lo (who also lends her vocals to the chorus), the Rolling Stones frontman grabs the mic to flaunt his considerable swagger (and his poor math skills: “Hard like geometry, trigonometry / This is crazy—psychology”) in a gruff closing 16.”

Amy Sciarretto of “Pop Crush” wrote that “This is not a pretty dance song. It’s harsh, rough around the edges and, well, hard.” Billboards Chris Payne wrote that ” The concept sounds crazy, but Will.i.am is the perfect studio whiz to oversee the commotion. The master of ceremonies adds to the fun by referencing “Back to the Future” to the Wu-Tang Clan to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in his opening verse.
