Snap The Power

After the snow storm this past weekend, I had been without ‘the power’, electricity, till Tuesday night. It feels good to have The Power again. As soon as the lights came back on, like any good professional DJ I thought of this song Snap The Power…

Snap The Power Story

“Snap The Power is an electronic pop hit song by the German music group Snap! from their album World Power. It was released in January 1990 and reached number-one in the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, as well as the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Rap charts. It is particularly known for its hook “I’ve got the power!”.

The song opens with the somewhat enigmatic line in Russian: “Американская фирма Transceptor Technology приступила к производству компьютеров «Персональный спутник»” (meaning “The American company Transceptor Technology has started production of the ‘Personal Companion’ computer”). “Personal Companion” was a computer-like device for the blind and visually impaired. Released in 1990, it was controlled by voice and could, among other functions, automatically download articles fromUSA Today by a built-in modem. It was made by Transceptor Technologies of Ann Arbor, Michigan.” Wikipedia

On July 5, 2011, a 39-story shopping mall called the “Techno-Mart” in Gwangjin-guSeoul, shook violently for 10 minutes and was evacuated for two days. After study, it was determined that about 20 people performing Tae Bo exercises to “The Power” caused the building to vibrate by creating a mechanical resonance. The tentative conclusion was the consensus among the six professors from an architectural institute and vibration measurement experts who participated in a recreation of the event. The Architectural Institute of Korea was scheduled to release the final results of the safety inspection later in 2011. This occurred after I left Korea. I think this is very interesting.

The Police Began Recording First Album Today

With a budget of only £1,500 borrowed from Stewart Copeland’s brother Miles Copeland III, The Police started recording their debut album at Surrey Sound Studios, Surrey, England with producer Nigel Gray. The album ‘Outlandos d’Amour’ which was released in November of this year featured the hits ‘So Lonely’, ‘Roxanne’ and ‘Can’t Stand Losing You’.

The Police originally formed due to a lack of success to the previous formation with Henry Padovani as guitarist. The second formation included Andy Summers, formerly of Eric Burden & The Animals. They toured as a four-piece band before they determined that Padovani was not wanted as guitarist, in favor of a three-piece ensemble.  In the post-Punk, Progressive Rock era, a three piece band was not common. This was a big risk for The Police.

They started with the now-famous bleach-blond hair when they were hired for a TV commercial that never aired needing them to be blonde. They decided after positive response from audiences to remain blonde.

Sting (Gordon Sumner), was initially a Jazz and Rock bassist, was not able to contribute to the writing early on due to his lack of knowledge of Punk Rock Music. Stewart Copeland was left to the songwriting duties in the beginning.

“The band has won a number of music awards throughout their career, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards—winning Best British Group once, an MTV Video Music Award, and in 2003, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Police have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, and were the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008, thanks to their reunion tour.” Wikipedia

“Although they existed for just over six years, the band’s contribution to the lexicon of rock was immense. They were the first band to fully integrate the no-nonsense approach of punk rock and the spirit-moving positive energy of reggae. Having sold an excess of 50 million albums worldwide, The Police had phenomenal chart success and won a multitude of accolades both public and critical, but they never allowed such peripherals to overshadow their commitment to the music itself. The band’s history bears that out from the beginning to end, providing a clear, concise picture of a musical group that took us on a short but unforgettable trip through the inner reaches of its soul – and let us have a great time in the process.” ThePolice.com

Freddie Mercury Died 11/24/1991: A DJ Reflects

Former Queen Lead Singer, Pianist and Lyricist Freddie Mercury died today in 1991 of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS. Freddie had come out and stated just the day before that he had contracted AIDS.

Freddie Mercury was one of the great singer and songwriters of the modern generation with his flamboyant style, reflective lyrics and dynamic four-octave vocal range.  He has touched fans, dancers and listeners worldwide and is still one of the most requested artists for me as a professional DJ. Just this past Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, a young man from London asked me if I would play Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga”. Of course, I did willingly. It was one, if the most, popular songs of the night at Applebee’s in Hackettstown, NJ. This is not a surprise due ot the wide fan-base that reaches across many genre and tastes.

I remember when I first heard Queen’s album A Night At The Opera. I was totally blown away by the vocal range and group harmonies on songs like “You’re My Best Friend” and the now classic “Bohemian Rhapsody”. There was not previously or since a band that has come close to matching their complex vocal harmonies, instrumentation, lyrics and unique style. On stage, they were very dynamic and drew raves from fans and critics alike globally.

Freddie Mercury Humanitarian

Freddie Mercury was a fearless humanitarian and activist that never shied away from criticism or challenges for the rights of others. He and Queen perofmed at many famous benefit concerts including Music For Kampuchia and Live Aid. At the Live Aid performance, the crowd spontneously began to clap collectively in the same manner as they had produced in the music video for the song “Radio Ga Ga”. I remember watching on TV and clapping along with them, a very inspirational moment. After, when asked about it, the band stated that it was not planned and they were surprised as anyone else since the audience was not just Queen fans but there for the cause and all the other performing acts as well.
