Wedding Day Pranks and Practical Jokes

MARCH 31, 2014 | BY MARTA 6

Practical jokes at a wedding are risky business. Tension is high, nerves are strained and you never know what hornet’s nest you might be stepping in to. On the other hand, a really great joke can help calm tensions and make for a memorable day. In honor of April Fool’s Day we asked some wedding professionals to share their stories of wedding day practical jokes.

Wedding planner Stephanie Eckweiler of The Finishing Touch tells of a couple who won a wedding from a contest, the catch being that it had to be planned in eight weeks. The groom took advantage of this rushed time frame to pull a prank on the officiant. He told the officiant that he had been too rushed and he wasn’t sure if they should go through with the wedding.

Pranking your officiant about cold feet is one thing, but planner Tracie Domino tells of a bride who had herself “checked in” at an airport on Facebook with the message, “I’m out of here” right before the wedding. Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques had a client who went one step farther. The bride did not show up at the altar, only to arrive via helicopter a few minutes later. The prank was especially effective because the groom was well known as being the more adventurous of the two.

Domino tells of another couple who decided to shock guests by having “She’s Having My Baby” as their first dance song (the bride was not pregnant).

DJ Mystical Michael (DJ Michael Swerdloff) helped a couple prank one of their groomsmen. The man apparently had a fear of public speaking and Swerdloff was instructed to hand him the mic after the Best Man and Maid of Honor toasts. Once he realized that it was a joke, he took it well.

Francesca DiSalvo-Follmer of Pure Luxe Bride remembers during the height of the “icing” craze a bride hiding a Smirnoff Ice in her garter. When the groom went to remove the garter he was “iced” forcing him to down the drink at the moment.

Several pros mentioned a wedding trend gaining in popularity that is almost a prank itself, the surprise wedding. A couple invite guests to what they assume is a normal party only to have it turn out to be a wedding.

One of the keys to pulling of a successful wedding day prank is to have the help of a wedding planner or other professional. Not only will the professional be able to make sure things go smoothly, he or she can give you a gentle heads up if what you’re suggesting is a really bad idea.

What do you think? Would you take well to a prank at a wedding? What if you were the bride or groom?

Trivia Host and DJ at O’Reilly’s Bar and Grill

I continue to have fun and enjoy my experience as Trivia Host and DJ at O’Reilly’s Bar and Grill in Newton, NJ on Tuesday Nights. We have lots of fun and everybody learns a thing or two, even the Trivia Host and DJ! We gets tarted somewhere between 9:30-10:00 and play till we finish, about two hours later. They give out great prizes and the competition is stiff but casual and playful.

Now that I have been a Trivia Host for over a year now and feel like I am actually getting good at it, or at least decent!  For those who don’t know, we play Bar Busters Pub Trivia. The game consists of seven Rounds or Categories; General Knowledge, Pictures, Sports, Music, Geography/History, Entertainment and a General Knowledge Bonus Round. The game is diverse enough that every team and player have a chance to do good, since we have questions that cover many different forms of trivia. One of the aspects of this particular trivia game I like best is the fact that you don’t have to shout out answers. In fact, nobody can shout out answers, they are all written down without anybody else knowing what you guessed! Great for people who want to have fun, test their brain a little and not want to make a fool of themselves in the process.

I enjoy Being a Trivia Host because it integrates some of my favorite character traits, excellent DJ and music, entertaining and sharpening up my brain while have lots of fun in the process. Of course, I can be a bit of a ‘ham’ at times but not too over-the-top.

What is Pub Trivia and A Trivia Host?

Here is what Wikipedia defines a Pub Quiz Game with a Trivia Host:

“A pub quiz is a quiz held in a public house. These events are also called quiz nights  or trivia nights and may be held in other settings. Pub quizzes may attract customers to a pub who are not found there on other days. The pub quiz is a modern example of a pub game. Though different pub quizzes can cover a range of formats and topics, they have many features in common. A 2009 study put the number of regular weekly pub quizzes in the UK at 22,445, and one website has counted approximately 2,000 regular weekly quizzes in the United States. The largest pub quiz, according to the Guinness Book of Records, was the “Quiz for Life”, held at the Flanders Expo Halls in Ghent, Belgium, on 11 December 2010 with 2,280 participants.”

Macklemore Thrift Shop

From the first time I heard Macklemore Thrift Shop, I knew this was a song I would play again and again, and it would be a hit. I did not know how much of a hit Macklemore Thrift Shop would be though. As someone who enjoys shopping at thrift shops and vintage clothing stores, I am so happy there is a Pop Culture song that honors this fun, creative and well, thrifty way to shop.

Macklemore Thrift Shop Music Video (Has curses)

I typically try my best to not review songs that have graphic language but in this case I made an exception because the video is hysterical and the curses actually add the song, not just make it ‘cool’.

Macklemore Thrift Shop Story

“Macklemore Thrift Shop illustrates the speaker’s interest in buying cheap clothing from thrift shops, disdaining designer labels and trends. He claims to enjoy donning “your grandad’s clothes” and impulsively buying something just because “it was 99 cents”. Macklemore spoke to MTV News about the meaning of the song: “Rappers talk about, oh I buy this and I buy that, and I spend this much money and I make it rain, and this type of champagne and painting the club, and this is the kind of record that’s the exact opposite,” he explained. “It’s the polar opposite of it. It’s kind of standing for like let’s save some money, let’s keep some money away, let’s spend as little as possible and look as fresh as possible at the same time.” Upon asked why he thought the track was so successful, Macklemore replied: “I think hip-hop goes in waves, and it’s something that’s different. It’s a concept. It’s obviously against the status quo of what people normally rap about. This is a song that goes against all of that. How much can you save? How fresh can you look by not looking like anybody else? And on top of that, you have an infectious beat and a hook that gets stuck in people’s heads.” The song has been called a critique of the product placement common in modern hip hop.”

Fun Wedding DJ New Jersey with Macklemore Thrift Shop

Macklemore Thrift Shop is a song by Seattle-based American rapper Macklemore and his producer Ryan Lewis. It was released as the fifth and final single from their collaborative debut studio album The Heist (2012) on October 8, 2012 and features vocals from Wanz. Despite being released on Macklemore’s independent label, with distribution by ADA, the single was met with unexpected commercial success, also a sleeper hit, peaking on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 1 while selling over 3 million copies in total, also reaching number 1 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, France, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. The song is the first independently-distributed title to top the Billboard Digital Songs since “We Are the World 25 for Haiti” in February 2010. It is also the second independent song in history to achieve the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, nearly 20 years after Lisa Loeb‘s “Stay (I Missed You)” in 1994. A music video was released to accompany the song’s release.

What could make me happier as a DJ than a song that reaches Billboard #1 about a thrift shop, being unique on an independent label! Thank you Macklemore Thrift Shop for providing some hope to the American record industry.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love

Beyonce’s debut single as a solo artist, Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love, co-written by Beyonce, Richard Harrison and Jay-Z. The beats and horns are sampled from The Chilites Are You My Woman. After a successful career with Destiny’s Child Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love was the beginning of her solo recording career and hit the mark from the first beat.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love is a song that I get professional DJ requests almost regardless of genre of the rest of the music being played and works with all of them!

An interesting fact about Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love is that Jay-Z was called in last minute at 3:00a.m. to add his rap which he did without a pad or pencil in ten minutes! I guess they had the magic together and it just worked. Of course, they were married years later.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love Success

Columbia Records released “Crazy in Love” on May 20, 2003, as the album’s lead single. The song was lauded by critics, who praised the horn sample, the guest appearance of Jay-Z, and the assertiveness with which Knowles sings the lyrics. “Crazy in Love” ranks 118th on Rolling Stone‘s 2010 list of the 500 greatest songs of all timeVH1 placed the song at number one on its 100 Greatest Songs of the 2000s list. At the 46th Grammy Awards, it won Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. “Crazy in Love” was Knowles’ first number one single as a solo artist in the United States, peaking on the BillboardHot 100 chart for eight consecutive weeks. Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun is such a great and fun song. Cyndi Lauper is one of those artists that it is hard not to like. She is fun, talented, creative and seems to always be completely herself in whatever she does.  A true unique talent who has not veered from her own style and way of doing things.  She was very loyal to her first band that she recorded with, Blue Angel, not allowing the record companies to break them apart.  She eventually found her way as a solo artist and was the first woman to have four Top 5 hits from the same album.

Wedding Bouquet Toss DJ Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun

“Lauper knew she could write songs, but the record company had a lot of material they wanted her to record. She altered a lot of the songs that were thrown her way, often changing the lyrics to suit her. An example is her Platinum-certified Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun; Lauper says the original lyrics of the song dealt more with a girl pleasing a man, and therefore she changed the lyrics, wanting the song to be more of an anthem as she felt the original song seemed misogynistic.” Wikipedia

Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun Music Video

There are few songs that are more fun to dance and party to than Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun. The video is hysterical and carries that fun and playful vibe throughout. It is noteworthy that Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun included girls from diverse races and backgrounds in her video, something that was not yet part of the music industry.  It is very common for a professional Wedding DJ play this song during either The Bouquet Toss or Garter during a wedding reception from women of all ages.

Snow and Gorgeous Fun Wedding at Highlawn Pavilion

It was a gorgeous Saturday Night closing out 2012 with a Fun Wedding and a great Bride and Groom. When I had first met with the Bride and Groom, the Bride smiled sheepishly and said, “Michael, I would be so happy if somehow it snowed really big flakes the morning of our Wedding, but not so much that it makes my friends and family not be able to attend our Fun Wedding. I think it would be so beautiful here at The Highlawn Pavilion to have thr grounds covered in snow!”

I laughed at the time at what seemed like a peculiar request. On the morning of their Fun Wedding, it snowed huge flakes and she was correct, it looked stunning at The Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange, New Jersey. When I drove in through the twisting road into Eagle Rock Reservation, where Highlawn Pavilion is nestled, I smiled from ear to ear as I approached the lights and snow-drifts. It looked like something out of a magazine. The New York City skyline in the background only added to the magical Winter landscape. I knew we were in for a special night, and I was correct this time.

Simple and Elegant Fun Weddings are My Favorite

Everything went perfect, as they typically do in well-managed venues like The Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange. Of course, the Bride looked amazing and so did the Groom! I am still a fool when it comes to simple and elegant Weddings. I know it is trendy to go over-the-top with Weddings these days, but for me, simple and elegant Fun Wedding are the my favorite.

Finally, the joy and celebration expanded with Friends and Family sharing the gorgeous Fun Wedding Night together:

But they asked for one more song to dance at the gorgeous Fun Wedding, so we honored their request:

What a beautiful and gorgeous Fun Wedding Night!

About Highlawn Pavilion, a Fun Wedding Venue:

Situated at the top of Eagle Rock Reservation, the building today known as Highlawn Pavilion, and the property around it, has a storied past.

“In 1909, an open masonry shelter affixed with a series of arches dubbed “the casino” was built on the crest of the Reservation and to this day serves as the bones of the structure that is Highlawn Pavilion.

The term “casino” refers to an Italian style county dwelling or summer house. As the Reservation became a popular spot where week-enders congregated the Italian term proved to be an accurate description.

Automobile enthusiasts of that period held races up the cobblestone roadway of Eagle Rock Avenue with the finish line in Eagle Rock Park, near where Highlawn is situated today.

After years of neglect, the casino was acquired by the Knowles family whose extensive renovation resulted in the creation of the restaurant known today as Highlawn.”
