Iggy Azalea Tops Hot 100 With ‘Fancy,’ Matches Beatles’ Historic Mark

This blew my mind when I read this on Billboard! Iggy Azalea is now keeping company historically with The Beatles!

Iggy Azalea Tops Hot 100 With ‘Fancy,’ Matches Beatles’ Historic Mark by Gary Trust

“As the Australian rapper rises 2-1 with ‘Fancy’ and 3-2 as a guest on Ariana Grande‘s ‘Problem,’ Azalea joins the Beatles as the only artists to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 hits

It’s a fab week for Iggy Azalea, who earns a chart honor not achieved since the Beatles swarmed the U.S. in early 1964. The Australian rapper crowns the Billboard Hot 100 with her debut hit “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX (2-1). As Azalea also rises 3-2 as the featured artist on Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” Azalea joins the Beatles as the only acts to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 hits.

Action abounds on this week’s Hot 100, including climbs into the top 10 for Nico & Vinz and Jason Derulo, while “Fancy” additionally takes over atop the Digital Songs chart, so let’s dive into our weekly look at the numbers behind the Hot 100’s top 10 and more.

Iggy Azalea, Charli XCX – Fancy (2014 Billboard Music Awards) Video

Iggy Azalea adds a chapter to the Hot 100’s record book by achieving a feat that the Beatles last earned on the Feb. 22, 1964, chart. That week, the Fab Four’s debut pop culture-changing smash “I Want to Hold Your Hand” held at No. 1 and “She Loves You” lifted 3-2. The songs had debuted the weeks of Jan. 18 and 25, 1964, respectively, and soared to the chart’s top two spots after the band made its landmark appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb. 9, 1964.

(Incredibly, “Hand” and “Loves” would hold the top two rungs for six weeks, with “Hand” on top for four frames before they swapped spots. On April 4, 1964, “Loves” fell 1-3 and “Hand,” 2-4, so, that week, the Beatles would have to settle for a consolation prize: the group locked up the April 4 list’s entire top five, the only time an act has monopolized the region in the Hot 100’s 55-year history.)

Flash-forward 50 years to March 22, 2014, when Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” bowed at No. 88. On the May 17 tally, Iggy Azalea launched her second entry, as Grande’s “Problem” roared in at No. 3. (The same week, Iggy Azalea’s “Work” entered at No. 88; the cut climbs 77-63 this week.)

Iggy Azalea Work Video

Expanding beyond only artists’ first two Hot 100 hits placing up at Nos. 1 and 2 in the same week, Iggy Azalea is the 15th act to double up at those ranks with any two titles. Iggy Azalea’s the first since Pharrell Williams did so for five weeks last year as featured on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (also featuring T.I.) and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” She’s just the third woman to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 concurrently, following Mariah Carey (Sept. 10, 2005) and Ashanti (five weeks, 2002).

Iggy Azalea additionally becomes only the fourth solo female rapper ever to top the Hot 100. Lauryn Hill was the first, having taken her debut solo hit “Doo Wop (That Thing)” to No. 1 for two weeks in November 1998. (She had first made her mark with the Fugees.) In 2001, Lil’ Kim led for five weeks with Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk on “Lady Marmalade,” while Shawnna assisted Ludacris on “Stand Up,” which topped the Dec. 6, 2003, chart.

Notably, a pair of other prominent female rappers have yet to reach the Hot 100’s summit. Among her nine top 10s, Missy Elliott climbed to No. 2 twice: for 10 weeks in 2002 with “Work It” and for seven frames in 2005 as a guest on Ciara’s “1, 2 Step.” Nicki Minaj has also tallied nine top 10s, reaching No. 3 twice, both in 2011: as featured on Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends” and with her own “Super Bass.” This week, Minaj debuts at No. 47 on the Hot 100 with her new single “Pills N Potions.”

(Honorable mention to Blondie, who, led by frontwoman Debbie Harry, is widely regarded as scoring the Hot 100’s first rap No. 1, “Rapture,” in 1981.)

Not to be lost in the celebration of Iggy Azalea’s new Hot 100 leader, Charli XCX likewise lands her first No. 1. In her sole prior visit, the U.K. pop singer/songwriter peaked at No. 7 a year ago this month as featured on Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”

Until this week, the last time that at least two solo women had teamed for a Hot 100 No. 1? Rihanna and Britney Spears sent “S&M” to the top of the April 30, 2011, chart. That title marked the first all-solo female No. 1 collab since “Lady Marmalade” nearly 10 years earlier. (The last pairing of only two solo women at the summit prior to “Fancy” and “S&M”? Brandy and Monica, who fought their way to No. 1 for 13 weeks in 1998 with “The Boy Is Mine.”)

2013wireless-sat-iggy azalea9150713 beatles - Rhode Island Wedding DJ - Providence DJ

(One other fun fact regarding the coronation of “Fancy”: the new Hot 100 is dated June 7, 2014. That makes for a perfect birthday present for the soon-to-be 24-year-old Azalea, who was born on June 7, 1990.)

How did “Fancy” fly to the Hot 100’s top spot? The song surges by sweeping the chart’s top Digital, Streaming and Airplay Gainer awards (for the second time in four weeks). It rises 2-1 on Digital Songs with a 44 percent gain to 336,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Aiding the song’s advance? Azalea and Charli XCX performed it on the Billboard Music Awards on May 18, the day before the latest sales tracking week began on May 19. “Fancy” spends a second week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (14 million U.S. streams, up 66 percent, according to Nielsen BDS) and reaches the Radio Songs top five (7-5; 104 million, up 23 percent).

Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea – Problem (Billboard Music Awards) Video

“Problem,” meanwhile, pushes 3-2 on the Hot 100, also with gains in each of the chart’s three metrics. It dips 1-2 on Digital Songs after spending its first three weeks at No. 1, but grows by 15 percent to 284,000. Grande likewise sang the song on the Billboard Music Awards (after Azalea performed “Fancy”; Azalea returned to the stage to join Grande for “Problem”). It slips 2-3 on Streaming Songs (10.4 million, up 39 percent) and bounds 16-10 on Radio Songs top 10 (73 million, up 30 percent), where it’s her first top 10 hit; her debut single, “The Way,” featuring Mac Miller, reached No. 12 on Radio Songs last year.

As she competes with herself (and Grande) at No. 2, Azalea handily lands the Hot 100’s top spot, as “Fancy” (up 46 percent) boasts 28 percent more overall chart points than “Problem” (up 25 percent).”

Quinceañera (pronounced: [kin.se.aˈɲe.ɾa]feminine form of “fifteen-year-old”), also called fiesta de quince años,fiesta de quinceañeraquince años or simply quince, is the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in parts of Latin America and elsewhere in communities of people from Latin America. This birthday is celebrated differently from any other birthday, as it marks the transition from childhood to young womanhood. The celebration, however, varies significantly across countries, with celebrations in some countries taking on, for example, more religious overtones than in others.

In the United States the tradition of La Quinceañera, also known as the XV has been adopted primarily in cities with an extensive Hispanic population. The planning for the quinceañera starts 12 to 18 months in advance. The ceremony and the venue determine the date of the event. The parents of the quinceañera will look for sponsors or “padrinos” to help with the expense associated with the event. After securing the venue for the reception and the church for the ceremony, they must find a fun DJ or musical group “El grupo” and a photographer. In New York there are boutiques that specialize in renting the chamberlains for the event.

If going with a theme Quinceañera such as masquerade or renaissance then decorations matching that theme would be appropriate. Even if your party is not themed specifically you will not want decorations to clash alongside the colors of the dresses and outfits. Decorations can be as simple as table center decorations to as fancy and extravagant as balloons, streamers, and the whole nine yards. Music should be chosen according to personal taste, if you are playing music with profanity or cursing, it is at your own risk. Just think of the potential young children and elderly people present and try to imagine their reactions when choosing music. If possible, you may want to hire a DJ to play music and announce the birthday girl’s entrance and other things.

Along with the fact that I’ve been a Social Worker, Counselor and Educator with adolescents for more than fifteen years, I have great knowledge and experience with fun Teen Parties as a Teen Party DJ for my Rhode Island and Massachusetts clients. Rhode Island DJ Tips for a Great Teen Party

Teens can sometimes be a tough audience to please. After all, they’re too old for childish entertainment and games, and they’re dying to look cool. But with all of that coolness in the air, a teen party can get pretty dull unless you find a way to get them active and involved with the party.

One of the easiest things you can do is to hire a DJ for your party. You’ll want the DJ to know and bring along all of the latest popular songs. The DJ should have the skills to get the group dancing and participating in games. Kiddie games such as musical chairs or hot potato suddenly become fun again when they are played to current hit tunes. A limbo contest, conga line and even freeze dance will relax the group and keep the party from becoming too cool for fun

The tips below are from Sonoma Family Life

There are many things to consider, but here are the top six I addressed before the party started:

Can Your House Handle It?
Ask yourself if your house big enough to hold a group of your teen’s friends. Is there space for dancing? What areas (like bedrooms) will be off limits? Will partygoers get noisy? Then you need to notify your neighbors of your plans. Remember, most municipalities require that you lower your music by 10 p.m.

When Will It Start?

…And, more importantly, when will it end? Agree on a reasonable length of time for the party. Consider issues such as noise and how guests will get home. Ask your teen to let each guest know that the party will definitely come to a close at the agreed time. (That’s when the music stops and you start putting the food and sodas away.)

Be strict about whether you will be allowing teens to return if they have left. If they told their parents that they’re at your house until 11 p.m., then that’s where the need to stay.

Batten Down the Hatches

Experienced party-planning parents suggested hiding or locking up anything you want to protect. So plan some extra time to put aside breakable items and valuables before the guests arrive. Set aside a “safe” room at the party where guests can put their coats and bags.

Chaperones
“One of the most important things we found out was that we had to make it clear to both parents and kids we would be there the entire time,” said mom Elaine Payne. Payne, who has two teenage sons, recently hosted a birthday/dance party for her son, Jason. “My husband Jeff and I retreated upstairs and watched a movie, but frequently we’d go downstairs for the proverbial ‘glass of water’ and to check on how the party was going.”

Of course you are going to be there the entire time, but you don’t have to stick out like Shaquille O’Neal at the ballet. As Payne suggests, blend in the background. Keep your distance while maintaining a watchful eye. Consider asking another set of parents to join you in the chaperoning duties. It’s nice to have reinforcements.

Rhode Island DJ Tips for a Great Teen Party

Get the Music Started
One of the easiest ways to make a teen party a hit is to hire a DJ. You’ll want the DJ to know and bring along all of the latest popular songs. Ask if he has ever hosted a teen party. He should have the skills and personality to get the group dancing and participating.

The Same Old Song

Let the teens choose their own music. Even if it just sounds like a lot of noise to you, as long as the lyrics aren’t offensive, let them enjoy. My mom never liked Led Zeppelin, but she still let me play their albums. So, even if you find 50 Cent’s music annoying, just for this night, tune it out. But you do have control as to how loud they play the edited version of “In Da Club.”

Rhode Island DJ Tips for a Great Teen Party

Good Eatin’
“Keep the food simple,” advises Payne, “just like you did when the kids were little.” Pizza, taco bar, nachos, giant sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs are all winning menu items with teens. Scatter bowls of munchies such as candy, licorice, popcorn and nuts around the party area.

Just remember, with the right mix of planning, supervision, freedom and restraint, your teen’s party can be a low stress success.

The latest information about music’s connection to mental power, wellness, and creativity emphasizes the importance of the art form: it should be an educational priority. The current federal education act produces both positive and negative outcomes for the arts in public schools. Music education advocates say they need strong support from grass-roots movements and local communities.

The Importance of Music Education for Kids

“Parents need to understand that they need to be proactive in this process and not reactive,” says Scott McCormick, founder and CEO for the National Association of Music Parents (AMP). “[School board meetings] are where the decisions are made and the discussions begin to happen, where budgets are looked at and talked about and things are said, where people have to be present on a regular basis to hear those things. Then, rally the troops before it becomes an issue.”

Music and Dance for Children with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was originally adopted in 1966. Since then, every presidential administration has reauthorized it, but put its own twist on it. The Bush Administration renamed it the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act in 2002. Their twist was to put more emphasis on testing and accountability. Currently, the act lists music and the arts as core subjects. This is a positive breakthrough in education reform.

“There have been aspects of NCLB that are beneficial for arts education,” says Marcia McCaffrey, president elect for State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE). “For instance, indicating that arts is a core content area and should therefore be available to all students. [But] you can’t say that’s true for the entire nation. Some of our students who need the arts the most to be successful are the ones who are not getting it.”

Problems arise when public schools follow the strict guidelines of adequate yearly progress (AYP), and are subjected to state and federal testing and accountability. This serves as a basis for all federal funding. Currently AYP only measures math and reading skills and public schools have no incentive to test other subjects. This can be unfavorable for the non-tested subjects such as the arts and music. The NCLB assessments and funding process change how administrators and teachers approach arts classes in regard to professional development and scheduling. When nationwide budget cuts take place, the funding for non-tested subjects are affected first, especially in low-income school districts.

Music and Dance for Children with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

This year the US Department of Education granted various state waivers for NCLB that give more flexibility with federal funds and provide an opportunity for states to redefine their adequacy programs. As Democrats and Republicans continue their struggle over the proper role of the federal government in education, the Obama administration has relieved more than half the nation’s schools from central provisions of NCLB in a short amount of time.

“The way we’re going to get better is to have community arts organizations, providers of supplemental arts instruction, certified arts teachers, and certified teachers in other content areas come together to talk about and show that they value the arts in education,” McCaffrey says.

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has partnered with the National Association for Music Education (NAFME) on what is known as the SupportMusic Coalition. Together they are arming the grassroots with the information and tools they need to make a case for supporting local music programs.

Music and Dance for Children with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

“When parents understand the value of critical thinking, cooperation, creative visioning, collaboration, and developing positive work ethics, they will almost insist that a child be a part of that program,” says Conn-Selmer vice president of education Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, at a SupportMusic Coalition teleconference. “And there’s no other part of the school curriculum that does this better than music.”

The coalition is designed to inform parents on national statistics and research, laying out the intrinsic value and economic arguments for music education. Educators stress that they can’t achieve change and progress by themselves. They need help from the public.

Music and Dance for Children with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

“The Support Music Coalition supports grass-roots advocacy and we’re working to keep music and arts education strong in communities everywhere, so every child has a chance to learn music and the arts as part of the core curriculum. Together we’re working to keep music education strong,” says Mary Luehrsen, NAMM director of public affairs and government relations.

Music and Dance for Children with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Participation and support are crucial for success. AMP is another nonprofit organization designed to assemble parents of school-aged students and bring about a national movement beginning at the local level.

Wondering how to get involved? There are many ways. Success depends on the involvement of concerned parents and the public. Learn how to rate your school, build your case, and develop effective advocacy strategies at www.SupportMusic.com. Be heard and achieve meaningful results on the local and national level by becoming a member of AMP at www.AMParents.org.

“[Even] for a parent whose child is going to be a doctor or a lawyer, the spin-off benefits [from music education] that the child develops in the habits of life skills, just can’t be denied,” Lautzenheiser says. “If anybody does their research and is able to connect that information to parents, I think our numbers will go up, I think our programs will remain strong, and I think administrators across the country will find a way for us to exist. So, that’s why it’s important for us to hang together rather than separately.”

Music and music education are so critical to the appreciation and creation of music. Humans need music and no better time to start than early childhood. I invite us all to support local music and art programs and school funding for music and art.  We all need to get involved and make sure all children get the opportunity to learn and appreciate music as part of a healthy lifestyle.Balnce doe snot just happen magically as an adult, it begins in early childhood. Maroon 5 One More Night

Maroon 5 keeps finding a way to blend their unique style into fascinating pop hits. In this age of sound-alike pop stars, it is refreshing to hear a band create their own sound and be successful to a broad range of listeners like Maroon 5 One More Night.

Maroon 5 One More Night Music Video

Maroon 5 One More Night have listed some of their musical influences as Prince, Michael Jackson, The Police, Oasis, Talking Heads and Shabba Ranks, as well as Stevie Wonder. You can here all these influences in their music and style clearly. It is not a surprise that they produce a poppy, dance-oriented version of Modern Rock with a semi-Reggae beat loosely infused. As a funny side note, the Los Angeles band’s previous name was ‘Kara’s Flowers’ due to the band having a “collective crush” on a girl they all knew. This may be part of the reason they write songs predominantly about love.

Jessie J Price Tag

I remember when I heard Jessie J Price Tag for the first time last year around this time. I was prepping for a professional DJ gig in Philly that was a benefit for kids. I try to do at least one gig a month that supports organizations working to make this a better place for all of us. It is hard for me to say no, since I was a counselor and social worker for almost twenty years, especially if it has to do with children. Besides, what is more fun than being a DJ for a kids event?  I made sure I listened to all my tracks to be certain I would know what mixes well with what. Kids can be supportive but when it comes to music, they are very specific in their wants and needs and they are not shy about asking or demanding.

As soon as I arrived at the event with my professional DJ equipment still in my hands, the event organizer came over to greet me with a a pack of young girls trailing behind her. She inrtoduced the girls to me and they could not be quiet long enough for me to hear what they were trying to ask me. When they calmed down so I could hear them, these two adorable girls kept begging me and made me promise to play Jessie J Price Tag for them. I was very surprised because Jessie J Price Tag had not made it to mainstream popularity yet and they were only about ten years old.

I promised them I would play Jessie J Price Tag and I did. Of course twenty minutes after I played the song, they asked for me to play again and then thirty minutes later for a third time. The thing about being a professional DJ at an event or party for kids, is you have to break the once an event rule for songs. They will not leave you alone till they break you down and get you to agree. How can you say no to them if they keep comig over with such excitement and enthusiasm?

Besides, it is getting harder and harder to find songs to play for young kids that have lyrics that are not made for teens or adults. In this case, Jessie J Price Tag is about not worrying about money and to dance to forget and not be so serious. A message we all need to hear every ow and then.

Jessie J Price Tag Lyrics

[Jessie J]
Okay, Coconut man, Moon Heads and pea
You ready

Seems like everybody’s got a price,
I wonder how they sleep at night.
When the sale comes first,
And the truth comes second,
Just stop for a minute and
Smile

Why is everybody so serious?
Acting so damn mysterious?
Got your shades on your eyes
And your heels so high
That you can’t even have a good time

[Pre-chorus:]
Everybody look to their left (yeah)
Everybody look to their right (uh)
Can you feel that (yeah)
We’re paying with love tonight

[Chorus:]
It’s not about the money, money, money
We don’t need your money, money, money
We just wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the price tag
Ain’t about the (uh) Cha-Ching Cha-Ching
Ain’t about the (yeah) Ba-Bling Ba-Bling
Wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the price tag.

[Jessie J]
We need to take it back in time,
When music made us all unite!
And it wasn’t low blows and video hoes,
Am I the only one getting tired?

Why is everybody so obsessed?
Money can’t buy us happiness
Can we all slow down and enjoy right now
Guarantee we’ll be feeling alright

[Pre-chorus]

[Chorus]

[B.o.B]
Yeah yeah
Well, keep the price tag
And take the cash back
Just give me six strings and a half stack
And you can, can keep the cars
Leave me the garage
And all I, yes all I need
Are keys and guitars
And guess what, in 30 seconds
I’m leaving to Mars
Yeah we leaving across
These undefeatable odds
It’s like this man
You can’t put a price on a life
We do this for the love
So we fight and sacrifice
Every night
So we ain’t gonna stumble and fall
Never
Waiting to see a sign of defeat
Uh uh
So we gonna keep everyone
Moving their feet
So bring back the beat
And then everyone sing

It’s not about the money

[Chorus 2x]

[Jessie J ‒ Outro]
Yeah yeah
Oh-oh
Forget about the price tag
