It’s now the day after Thanksgiving and I felt inspired to follow Wednesday’s post of Rhode Island DJ Songs of Thanks with Rhode Island DJ Songs of Peace. The title to every song on this list includes some version for he word “Peace”. There are a few versions of the same songs that stand out like Cat Stevens “Peace Train” and Elvis Costello “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love and Understand”.

“(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” is a 1970s song written by English singer/songwriter Nick Lowe and recorded in the best-known version by Elvis Costello.

The song was originally released in 1974 on the album The New Favourites of… Brinsley Schwarz by Lowe’s band Brinsley Schwarz and released as a single; this version was included on Lowe’s 2002 compilation Anthology (along with the Elvis Costello version), and his 2009 compilation Quiet Please… The New Best of Nick Lowe, as well as 1991’s Surrender to the Rhythm: The Best of Brinsley Schwarz, 1996’s Naughty Rhythms: The Best of Pub Rock 1970-1976, and 1998’s Pub Rock: Paving the Way for Punk.

The Elvis Costello & The Attractions version was first issued as the B-side of Lowe’s 1978 single “American Squirm” credited to “Nick Lowe and His Sound”. At the time, Lowe was Costello’s producer, and he produced this track as well. When the song became a hit, it was quickly appended as the last track to the U.S. edition of Costello’s album Armed Forces. It has appeared on most of Costello’s “Best of” compilations over the years, as well as on the soundtrack to the film “200 Cigarettes”. Live versions appeared on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Volume 7: 2002-2003, and 2012’s The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook, both by Elvis Costello and the Attractions. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked this version of the song as the 284th best song of all time.

In 2004, “(What’s So Funny ’bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” was regularly performed as an all-star jam on the “Vote for Change” tour, which featured a rotating cast of headliners. The October 11 concert at the MCI Centre in Washington DC was broadcast live on the Sundance Channel and on radio. This version of the song featured Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Dixie Chicks, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, and John Fogerty with Michael Stipe, Bonnie Raitt, Keb’ Mo’, and Jackson Browne.

When discussing how he wrote “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)”, George Harrison states in his 1980 autobiography, I, Me, Mine: “Sometimes you open your mouth and you don’t know what you are going to say, and whatever comes out is the starting point. If that happens and you are lucky, it can usually be turned into a song. This song is a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it.” “Give Me Love” continued the precedent set by Harrison in his 1970 single “My Sweet Lord“, where he blended the Hindu bhajan with Western gospel tradition, and the song repeats another Harrison hit formula by using a three-syllable lyrical hook as its title, like “My Sweet Lord”, “What Is Life” and “Bangla Desh“. In a further similarity with those earlier songs, he wrote “Give Me Love” very quickly; Harrison biographer Alan Clayson describes it as having “flowed from George with an ease as devoid of ante-start agonies as a Yoko Ono ‘think piece'”.

Harrison had embraced the theme of karma and reincarnation in the songs “Run of the Mill” and “Art of Dying“, both released on his 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass. With “Give Me Love”, the “starting point” that Harrison refers to in I, Me, Mine led to a statement expressing the singer’s vision for life in the physical world, a life devoid of the karmic burden of rebirth:

“Give Peace a Chance” is a song written by John Lennon in Montreal, Canada (originally under the moniker Lennon–McCartney), released as a single in 1969 by the Plastic Ono Band on Apple Records, catalogue Apple 13 in the United Kingdom, Apple 1809 in the United States. It is the first solo single issued by Lennon, released when he was still a member of the Beatles and became ananthem of the American anti-war movement during the 1970s. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the British singles chart.

Rhode Island DJ Songs of Thanks

I thought it would be fun to make a collection of songs with the word “Thank” in the title. So, I’m calling this Rhode Island DJ Songs of Thanks. Not very original but makes sense due to tomorrow being Thanksgiving. Some songs are traditional songs related to Thanksgiving but some aren’t, or are a little more playful about saying thank you or giving thanks. “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin appears twice, the original and a somber cover by Tori Amos.

Dido wrote the song as a tribute to her boyfriend, entertainment lawyer Bob Page; they got engaged in 2001 but split the following year. It remains Dido’s biggest hit single in the USA to date, and her only one to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. “White Flag“, which features on her second album Life For Rent, is about their split.

“Thank You” signaled a deeper involvement in songwriting by singer Robert Plant, being the first Led Zeppelin song that he wrote all the lyrics for. According to various Led Zeppelin biographies, this is also the song that made Jimmy Page realise that Plant could now handle writing the majority of the lyrics for the band’s songs. Plant wrote the song as a tribute to his then-wife Maureen.

“Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” is a 1969 song recorded by Sly and the Family Stone. The song, double a-sided with “Everybody Is a Star“, reached number one on the soul single charts for five weeks, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. “Thank You” was intended to be included on an in-progress album with “Star” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime“; the LP was never completed, and the three tracks were instead included on the band’s 1970 Greatest Hits LP. “Thank You” and “Star”, the final Family Stone recordings issued in the 1960s, marked the beginning of a 20-month gap of releases from the band, which would finally end with the release of “Family Affair” in 1971.

The song’s length on the original hit single and the “Greatest Hits” LP is 4:48 and was re-channeled to simulate stereo on the very popular “Greatest Hits” LP. The previously unreleased full length version in true stereo (6:18) was mixed by Bob Irwin and only issued on the 1990 Columbia promotional CD “Legacy: Music For The Next Generation”. On the subsequent (and currently available as of 2013) “The Essential Sly & The Family Stone” 2-CD set, the track is in stereo but is the standard 4:48 length hit version.

Rolling Stone ranked the song #402 on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time“.

Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 11/19

We have a new Rhode Island DJ Music Chart this week with Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” the new number one. The song had reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts several weeks ago but is top of the DJ Music Charts this week. It replaced Avicii “Wake Me Up” after three weeks on top. Lorde and Lady Ga Ga maintain their positions in the top five with Drake at number five with “Hold On We’re Going Home”.

DJ Music Chart – Week of 11/19 Featuring Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball”

“Wrecking Ball” is a song performed by American recording artist Miley Cyrus for her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It was released on August 25, 2013, by RCA Records as the second single from the record. It was written by MoZella, Stephan Moccio,Sacha Skarbek, Lukasz Gottwald, and Henry Russell Walter. It was produced by Dr. Luke and Circuit. “Wrecking Ball” is a pop song which lyrically discusses the deterioration of a relationship; it was speculated to be inspired by Cyrus’ former engagement to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth.

Upon its release, “Wrecking Ball” received generally mixed reviews from music critics, who were ambivalent towards its lyrical content and overall production. Having originally been serviced as a promotional single through the iTunes Store, it debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 50. However, it later became Cyrus’ first number-one single in the United States after the release of its controversial music video. Internationally, the song charted strongly; it topped the charts in Canada and the United Kingdom, and charted in the top-ten throughout much of Europe and Oceania.

An accompanying music video for “Wrecking Ball” was released on September 9, 2013. It featured close-up scenes of Cyrus tearfully singing, reminiscent of the clip for “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor, interspersed with footage of a nude Cyrus swinging on a wrecking ball. Critics were divided in their opinions of the music video; some appreciated its diversity from Cyrus’ previous single “We Can’t Stop“, while others felt it was more provocative than its predecessor. “Wrecking Ball” currently holds the Vevo record for the most views in the first 24 hours after its release, and the record for being the fastest clip to reach 100 million views on the service. Cyrus has performed “Wrecking Ball” during several live performances, including the iHeartRadio Music Festival and an episode of Saturday Night Live.

The video was directed by Terry Richardson and released by Vevo on September 9, 2013. The video begins with a close-up of Cyrus standing in front of a completely white backdrop and crying while performing the song. The video also shows Cyrus sitting wearing nothing but dark red Dr. Martens boots on top of a wrecking ball (similar to the single cover) and licking a sledgehammer. On September 24, 2013, a Director’s Cut version of the video was also released, featuring only the footage of Cyrus against the white backdrop singing and crying to the camera.

Cyrus said of the video:
I think the video is much more, if people get past the point that I’m naked and you actually look at me you can tell that I actually look more broken than even the song sounds. The song is a pop ballad. It’s one of these songs that everyone is going to relate to, everyone has felt that feeling at one point. If people can take their minds out of the obvious and go into their imagination a little bit and see kind of what the video really means and the way it’s so vulnerable and actually if you look in my eyes I look more sad than my voice sounds on the record it was a lot harder to do the video than it was to record the songs. It was much more of an emotional experience.”

Avicii “Wake Me Up” is number 1 for the second straight week of the DJ Music Chart for the week of November 5th! The rest of the top five is the same with Lorde “Royals” number 2 and Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” and Katy Perry “Roar” switching positions. Lady Ga Ga “Applause” stays at number 5.

“Demons” is a song written by American alternative rock band Imagine Dragons and record producer Alex da Kid, recorded by the band for their major-label debut extended play Continued Silence. It appears as the second track on the EP. The song also makes an appearance on their debut studio album Night Visions, where it appears as the fourth track. “Demons” was solicited to Americantriple A radio stations on January 28, 2013 and to modern rock stations on April 1. The song, which serves as the album’s overall fifth single and was released as the third single from Night Visions in the United States, has peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. “Demons” is a indie rock song with lyrics speaking of a protagonist warning a significant other of his flaws. The song was released to contemporary hit radio stations on 17 September 2013. On October 22, 2013, “Demons” was released as an official single.

An MTV report on the “Demons” music video stated that it would “fit nicely with the artful imagery of ‘It’s Time‘ and the thoroughly out-there puppet grappling of ‘Radioactive‘.” Released on May 7, 2013 and shot in Las Vegas, Nevada at the band’s performance at The Joint on February 9, 2013, the video features a mix of live footage of the band and a companion narrative. Various characters with personal hardships are depicted, including a victim of parental abuse, a military veteran, and a weakly man who stares at himself in a mirror. The clip ends with a dedication to Tyler Robinson, a fan of the band who died at the age of 17 in March 2013 following a battle with cancer.

Following the release of Night Visions, Imagine Dragons embarked on a world tour, and performed on major late night shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman and Conan. Billboard named Imagine Dragons “The Breakthrough Band of 2013,” and Rolling Stone named their single “Radioactive” “the biggest rock hit of the year.”

The band’s debut album, Night Visions is currently certified at Platinum in the United States, Austria, Canada, Portugal, and Sweden, having sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone. The album is also certified gold in multiple countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, New Zealand, Philippines, and Switzerland. For the third week in a row, we have anew number one song on top of the DJ Music chart for October 28th, Avicii “Wake Me Up”. The rest of the top all switched places, with the exception of Jay-Z “Holy Grail” moving back to number 7,  Lorde “Royals”, Katy Perry “Roar”, Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” and new entry Lady Ga Ga “Applause”.

DJ Music Chart – Week of 10/28 Featuring Avicii “Wake Me Up”

Wake Me Up” (stylized as “Wake Me Up!“) is a song by Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii, which features uncredited vocals from American soul singer Aloe Blanc and acoustic guitar from Incubus‘ Mike Einziger. It was released in June 2013 as the first single from Avicii’s full-length debut studio album, True, which was released on 17 September 2013.

The song achieved critical and commercial success internationally, peaking at number one in much of Europe and charting well in all of the English-speaking world. The song has been described as a “summer anthem” by Variance Magazine and, throughout the 2013 festival season, Avicii included it as part of the opening or closing sequence of his sets at EDC Las Vegas, EDC London,Tomorrowland, Creamfields, Electric Zoo and iTunes Festival.

In an interview with the Daily Star, Avicii, who had previously labelled “Wake Me Up!” as “a fun experiment” during an exclusive chat with MTV UK, said: “I had a demo with Mac Davis singing, the guy who wrote all the Elvis Presley stuff, but I needed another singer to do the parts. At the same time I was tipped off about doing another track with Aloe Blacc and I started working on that track. When I was with Mike Einziger from Incubus, we came up with the chord progression and the melody for Wake Me Up but no real lyrics. None of us sing and we really needed to get that demo down and the only person I knew that lived in LA was Aloe, so I called him and he was free. Lyrics come really easy to him so he wrote them in a couple of hours and we finished the track.”

A lyric video to accompany the release of “Wake Me Up!” was first released into YouTube on June 28 2013 at a total length of four minutes and twelve seconds, teaser clips for the official video were also released.

The official video for was released on to YouTube on 29 July 2013. The younger girl in the video is Laneya Grace and the older girl is Kristina Romanova. The video includes cross-promotion from Denim & Supply by Ralph Lauren and Sony Xperia Z smartphone. The video was shot in the Santa Clara River, orange groves and in the town of Fillmore, California, west of Los Angeles as well as Downtown LA. Avicii concert footage was from Miami.

Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 10/21

This weeks DJ Music Chart has a new number one with Lorde “Royals”! The rest of the top five is the same with a bit of musical chairs in placement; Katy Perry “Roar”, Avicii “Wake Me Up” and Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball”. Drake, Paramore, Talyor Swift and Britney Spears are all climbing quickly, so look for them to move into the top five of the DJ Music Chart in the upcoming weeks.

Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born 7 November 1996), known by her stage name Lorde (/ˈlɔrd/), is a New Zealandsinger-songwriter. Her first EP, The Love Club, was released on 22 November 2012, and her first single, “Royals“, debuted at number one on the New Zealand Top 40, and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, making her the first New Zealand solo artist to have a number one song in the United States. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, was released on 27 September 2013. She won the Silver Scroll Award for 2013 for “Royals”.

Lorde’s music draws from electropop, but she grew up listening to soul musicians Etta James and Otis Redding. She cites the unusual vocals of Grimes, the band Sleigh Bells and producer SBTRKT as prominent influences for Lorde.[34][35] Lorde also stated that she was inspired by the initially hidden identities of Burial and The Weeknd, explaining, “I feel like mystery is more interesting”, and called American musical artist Nicki Minaj an “important female in pop”. Lorde describes short story writers Raymond Carver, Wells Tower, Tobias Wolff and Claire Vaye Watkins as lyrical inspirations, and particularly noted their sentence structures.

During the writing of The Love Club (2013), Lorde was particularly influenced by Kanye West and she performed a cover version of West’s song “Hold My Liquor” at her Auckland concert on 7 September 2013.

“Royals” is the debut song by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde from her The Love Club EP (2012) and debut album, Pure Heroine (2013). The song was released on 8 March 2013, as the lead single from the album, after she was spotted at the age of 12 by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan, who signed her to Universal records. Lorde and Joel Little co-wrote and produced the song. Musically, “Royals” is a minimal and art pop song. Lyrically, it expresses the protagonist’s disdain for celebrities’ lavish lifestyles and contains a vow that she will not become one of them.

Upon release “Royals” was met with acclaim, winning the prestigious Silver Scroll Award for 2013, New Zealand’s top songwriting prize. Critics compared the song to that of British singer Adele‘s music and called the song “one of the best releases of the year.” “Royals” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also peaked at number one in Ireland, Canada and New Zealand and was certified triple platinum by Recorded Music NZ. This week’s DJ Music Chart continues with Katy Perry “Roar” as number 1 for the third straight week. Right behind Katy Perry is Avicii “Wake Me Up”.  Rounding out the top five are Lana Del Rey “Summertime Sadness”, Lorde “Royals” and Jay-Z “Holly Grail”.

This week we will review Avicii and “Wake Me Up”.

“Wake Me Up” (stylized as “Wake Me Up!“) is a song by Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii, which features uncredited vocals from American soul singer Aloe Black and acoustic guitar from Incubus‘ Mike Einziger. It was released in June 2013 as the first single from Avicii’s full-length debut studio album, True, which was released on 17 September 2013.

The song achieved critical and commercial success internationally, peaking at number one in much of Europe and charting well in all of the English-speaking world. The song has been described as a “summer anthem” by Variance Magazine and, throughout the 2013 festival season, Avicii included it as part of the opening or closing sequence of his sets at EDC Las Vegas, EDC London, Tomorrowland, Creamfields, Electric Zoo and iTunes Festival.

In an interview with the Daily Star, Avicii, who had previously labelled “Wake Me Up!” as “a fun experiment” during an exclusive chat with MTV UK, said: “I had a demo with Mac Davis singing, the guy who wrote all the Elvis Presley stuff, but I needed another singer to do the parts. At the same time I was tipped off about doing another track with Aloe Blacc and I started working on that track. When I was with Mike Einziger from Incubus, we came up with the chord progression and the melody for Wake Me Up but no real lyrics. None of us sing and we really needed to get that demo down and the only person I knew that lived in LA was Aloe, so I called him and he was free. Lyrics come really easy to him so he wrote them in a couple of hours and we finished the track.”

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy blog gave the song a positive review, stating:

“As chart-friendly EDM continues to reach the furthest corners of the globe, staying ahead of the pack can prove a tricky task – especially when more and more acts arrive on the scene turning out mixes with identikit build-ups, tired lyrics and uninspired breakdowns that newcomers to the arena lap up with excitement. Kudos to Avicii then, who has dared to try something a little different for his latest offering. “So wake me up when it’s all over/ When I’m wiser and I’m older,” featured artist Aloe Blacc sings over dialled-up, country-flecked guitar strums that sound like Mumford & Sons on speed. The jig-along chorus may conjure up images of Brits-on-tour, but to be honest, what summer anthem doesn’t?” 4/5 stars

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1986), known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer-songwriter. Del Rey started writing at the age of 18 and she signed her first recording contract when she was 22 years old with 5 Points Records in 2007, releasing her first digital album Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant in January 2010. Del Rey bought herself out of the contract with 5 Points Records in April 2010. She signed a joint contract with Interscope, Polydor, and Stranger Records in July 2011.

Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 9/16

This weeks DJ Music Chart finally has a change at the top! Katy Perry “Roar” has replaced Robin Thicke “Blurred Lines” after it topped the DJ Music Charts the entire summer. Capital Cities “Safe and Sound” moves up to number 2 with Zedd “Clarity” moving up to number 3. Lana Del Ray “Summertime Sadness” fills out the top five along with “Blurred Lines”.

“Roar” is a song recorded by American singer Katy Perry, released as the lead single from her upcoming album, Prism (2013). Composed by Perry, Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee, and Henry “Cirkut” Walter. “Roar” is a midtempo power pop song. Its lyrical content faces the themes of standing up for oneself.

The song received generally positive reviews from music critics, who thought it was a “determined note” for Perry’s new album and described it as a “sure-to-be radio hit”. Although most reviews were positive, some thought the lyrics were predictable and contained “clichés“. The single became the singer’s eighth non-consecutive US Billboard Hot 100 number one, and gave Perry her biggest digital song sales week ever, breaking her previous record held by “Firework“. The song also peaked within the top 10 of 25 other charts, while topping music charts at 9 countries in total. A video for “Roar” was released on September 5, 2013, which was directed by Grady Hall and Mark Kudsi, and filmed at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

Perry was criticized by PETA for using exotic animals in the video for “Roar”. Merrilee Burke from PETA stated: “Animals used for entertainment….. endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods. They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar or frightening situations.” Burke also declared that the animals involved in the music video were allegedly provided by a company who was criticized by US officials.
