Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 6/25

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis “Can’t Hold Us” continues to top the DJ Music Charts for the fourth consecutive week. This particular chart is from DJ playlists nationwide and is different than the Billboard Hot 100, which has Robin Thicke “Blurred Lines” number 1. The top five of this week’s DJ Music Chart has Icona Pop, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk all holding strong with Daft Punk “Get Lucky” reaching number 5 for the first time.

DJ Music Chart for Week 6/25 – C.H.R Format

Contemporary hit radio (also known as CHR, Contemporary Hits, Hit List, Current Hits, Hit Music, Top 40, or Pop Radio) is a radio format that is common in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia that focuses on playing current and recurrent popular music as determined by the Top 40 music charts. There are several subcategories, dominantly focusing on rock, pop, or urban music. Used alone, CHR most often refers to the CHR/pop format. The term Contemporary Hit Radio was coined in the early 1980s by Radio & Records magazine to designate Top 40 stations which continued to play hits from all musical genres such as pop music splintered into Adult contemporary, urban contemporary and other formats. The term Top 40 is also used to refer to the actual list of hit songs, and, by extension, to refer to pop music in general. The term has also been modified to describe Top 50; Top 30; Top 20; Top 10; Hot 100 (each with its number of songs) and Hot Hits radio formats, but carrying more or less the same meaning and having the same creative point of origin with Todd Storz as further refined by Gordon McLendon as well as Bill Drake. Wedding Entrance Music & Bridal Party Introduction Songs

Wedding Entrance Music

Time to choose your wedding entrance music! Your ceremony is over and it is time for the celebration to begin. After you have had your photographs taken and your guests have mingled and had a drink during cocktail hour, it is time to sit down for the reception.

How To Hire The Best Wedding DJ!

On your way over to the reception venue, give your MC or best man a call so that they can get all your guests to move to their seats.

Alternatively, arrive quietly during the cocktail hour, mingle a little, have a drink and do the formal grand entrance once your guests have taken their seats.

Or you could also enter while the guests are still having cocktail hour. It depends on how much of a grand entrance you plan to make.

Wedding Entrance Music & Bridal Party Introduction Songs - Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Your wedding entrance music or grand entrance song (as it is also known) is a tradition meant to announce you for first time as husband and wife. It is also tradition to announce the rest of the bridal party, but it is not always necessary with smaller weddings where everyone will know one another or with less formal events.

The wedding entrance music you choose should reflect that the fun and celebration is about to start. You can of course choose something more epic if you wish, but generally it should be an upbeat, well-known song to get your guests enthusiastically clapping and welcoming you.

How To Choose The Perfect Wedding Entrance Music

Here are a few questions to ask yourselves to help you decide on the perfect wedding entrance song to use for your grand entrance, and to decide how you want this important event to play out:

1. Will your guests and wedding party recognize the song, or is it too new or obscure to be appreciated?

2. Does it reflect your personalities as a couple and your wedding party?

3. Is this wedding entrance music appropriate for the wedding reception? – even with the most formal of occasions it is appropriate to have a fun and upbeat song for this occasion, but it is never appropriate, no matter how informal the reception is, to play an offensive song with explicit lyrics.

4. Do you want to use an instrumental song or version of a song, or one with lyrics too?

5. Is your wedding party to be announced too, or will it just be the bride and groom?

6. How would you like to be announced – as Mr & Mrs Jones, the Bride and Groom or simply John and Mary?

7. Keep in mind that you will only use a small part of the song (the first minute or so), so choose something that has impact in the first 30 seconds.

8. Enhance your grand entrance further with some special effects – ask your dj or band if they can provide a bubble machine or a smoke machine, or hire one in from an audio visual company.

Wedding Entrance Music & Bridal Party Introduction Songs - Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Once your best man or MC has asked all your guests to be seated, he will gather up the two of you and your wedding party (if they are to be announced as well) outside of the reception area. He must make sure that the DJ or band leader is aware that you are about to do the grand entrance and should have the appropriate music ready.

Choose an entrance song for your wedding party. The grandparents can be acknowledged and introduced where they are seated in the reception area. The bride’s parents will then be introduced followed by the groom’s parents, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the flower girls and ring bearer, the maid/matron of honor and the best man.

Choose a second wedding entrance song for yourselves, the Bride and Groom.

Paul McCartney Turns 72!

My entire life has been one amazing Paul McCartney song after another. It started obviously, with The Beatles, followed by Wings and his solo career. Paul McCartney is a living legend in the music industry and continues to be so.

The Paul McCartney Story

Sir James Paul McCartneyMBE (born 18 June 1942) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer. With John LennonGeorge Harrison and Ringo Starr, he gained worldwide fame as a member of the Beatles, and hiscollaboration with Lennon is one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. After the band’s break-up, he pursued a solo career, later forming Wings with his first wife, Linda, and singer-songwriter Denny Laine.

Paul McCartney & The Beatles First Visit to The USA

Guinness World Records described McCartney as the “most successful composer and recording artist of all time”, with 60 gold discs and sales of over 100 million albums and 100 million singles, and as the “most successful songwriter” in United Kingdom chart history. More than 2,200 artists have covered his Beatles song “Yesterday“, more than any other song in history. Wings’ 1977 release “Mull of Kintyre” is one of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in March 1999, McCartney has written, or co-written 32 songs that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2013 he has sold over 15.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States.

Paul McCartney & Wings Jet Live

McCartney has released an extensive catalogue of songs as a solo artist and has composed classical and electronic music. He has taken part in projects to promote international charities related to such subjects as animal rightsseal huntinglandminesvegetarianism, poverty, and music education. McCartney has married three times and is the father of five children.

Paul McCartney Dominates Bonnaroo

For anyone born in the last quarter century who wondered whether Paul McCartney’s allotted two-and-a-half-hour set would be “too much” for the 70-year-old Beatle was justly put to shame Friday night when Macca delivered a truly legendary, 24-song set that, by the way, lasted almost three hours.

Paul McCartney at Bannaroo with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Every year, Bonnaroo’s Friday-night, headlining artist is the impetus for many to splurge on the festival ticket. McCartney’s main-stage act was no exception, considering its cross-generational, grin-inducing appeal to, well, everyone. Not one to settle for the expected, McCartney played more than his back-catalogue staples (which, for the record, would have been completely acceptable). Among the lovingly off-kilter setlist selections were “Your Mother Should Know,” “All Together Now” and “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da,” all of which were met with equal affinity as the “Let it Be’s” and the “Hey Jude’s” of the night.

It was the greatest, most sincere sing-along that has ever been conceived. To witness McCartney perform “Something” on ukulele in tribute to George Harrison, moments before a cannon-blazing rendition of “Live and Let Die” and a suitably zealous “Helter Skelter,” was as fantastical as it was fierce. It was the perfect environment for Bonnaroo’s Dropping Point — the point at which Bonnaroo gently lifts you and then not-so-gently drops you into the festival, typically spearheaded by the Friday night, headlining act. Arcade Fire and Radiohead occupied the spot in 2011 and 2012, respectively, and McCartney passed the torch as if “Love Me Do” were released yesterday. It will be arduous to top someone whose song book is so collectively enamored, but if there is a festival in which we can instill faith, it’s Bonnaroo (they brought us a Beatle).

Paul McCartney in Brooklyn

Happy Birthday Paul McCartney!

McCartney said he had the idea of “Let It Be” after he had a dream about his mother during the tense period surrounding the sessions for The Beatles (the “White Album”). McCartney explained that his mother—who died of cancer when McCartney was fourteen—was the inspiration for the “Mother Mary” lyric. He later said, “It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. So that got me writing ‘Let It Be’.” He also said in a later interview about the dream that his mother had told him “It will be all right, just let it be.”

The Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps – Wedding Music Mistakes – Wedding Music Ideas

This article on The Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps and Wedding Music Mistakes is from a post on The Knot. I like the fact that it is not taken from just one Wedding DJ or Wedding Band, because he or she may state what reflects their particular strengths and hides their weaknesses. This kind of a cross-section of Wedding DJs and Bands creates a more honest and balanced approach and source of information for you.

Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps - Wedding Music Mistakes with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Wedding Music: The Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps

We got wedding bands and DJs across the country to let us in on the biggest mistakes couples make at their weddings. Here’s what they said.

The Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps

Mistake 1: Forgetting to check sound ordinance laws.

“Brides need to check for sound ordinances in the town that their reception will be held or restrictions on noise levels at their venues. Some venues have a restricted sound level and end-time policies. You don’t want your reception to end early unexpectedly.”

-Johnna Dionne, Wavelength Band

Mistake 2: Not meeting the Wedding DJ until the day of their wedding.

“A face-to-face meeting is the best way to determine if the Wedding DJ is qualified and will give you what YOU want. Also, you can determine if you have a personality match with the Wedding DJ and if he or she is someone who will deliver a fun day.”

-Brian S. Graham, ADJA Knoxville Chapter

Mistake 3: Having too small of a dance floor.

“If there is nowhere to maneuver, then congestion on the dance floor can be a nightmare because people get bumped into, glasses break, and drinks can be spilled. Having more room will encourage your guests to get on the dance floor.”

-Jeremy Gerba, Lethal DJ Services

Mistake 4: Playing only one type of music.

“Too much of a good thing is a bad thing in Wedding music. Weddings will always have a wide range of age groups, so you need to switch things up to keep the Wedding music fresh!”

-DJ Pat, Sound Prodigy

Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps - Wedding Music Mistakes with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Mistake 5: Forgetting to make a do-not-play list.

“The last thing a bride wants to hear at her reception is a band she hates or maybe a song that reminds her of her husband’s ex! Recently I had a bride who vetoed any Michael Jackson for that specific reason, so throughout the reception, when I got a request for Michael, I had to pretend that I forgot to bring any. The Wedding DJ always has to remember that it’s the bride and groom’s wedding — not theirs — and our job is to make it the celebration that they really want!”

-Richard Blade, RichardBlade.com

Mistake 6: Requesting too many songs.

“Keep in mind that a Wedding DJ plays approximately 12 to 15 songs per hour, so for the average four-hour reception, that’s only around 60 songs. A good rule of thumb is to keep your request list to about 25 songs or so. That way you get to hear all of your songs, plus you give your Wedding DJ freedom to take requests from your guests.”

– Russ Knight, Knight Flight Professional DJs

Mistake 7: Choosing long special dance songs.

“It can get boring for your guests. Of course this is your day, and these dances are special, however, when choosing those special songs, consider shortening the mother-son songs and father-daughter songs. These dances are great, and you should spend this special moment with your parent(s), but once the congratulations, I’ll miss you, and thank-yous are done, end the dance.”

-Jeremy Jones, Entertainment Solutions

Mistake 8: Not paying attention to the flow of the events.

“To create energy for an active dance floor, make sure the wedding flow of events moves along nicely,” says Tim Benter, DJs To Go Inc.. “If you have a 90-minute cocktail hour and two hours of dinner your guests will be looking for a nap, not a dance floor. Keep your cocktail hour to “an hour” and then move into a well served dinner service process.”

Another flow-of-events mistake has to do with the way you configure the room — “A very common mistake is having the bar in a different room than where the dancing is supposed to happen,” says DJ Nahchey, Dash Entertainment. “When couples do this, it splits the event into drinkers and dancers, and the party doesn’t really come together.”

Top 10 Wedding Music Mishaps - Wedding Music Mistakes with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

Mistake 9: Picking too many obscure songs.

“As music professionals, we certainly appreciate all kinds of music, however, the guests may not. They go to a wedding expecting to hear music they know and can dance to,” says Gina Diegnan of In the Mix DJ Service. Daniel Blevins of CSC Special Events & Creative Services agrees with this tip: “A simple rule for music selection is 90% of the Wedding music played should be known by 90% of the guests.”

Mistake 10: Not verifying your DJ.

“Make sure the Wedding DJ you are talking with will be the actual Wedding DJ performing at your reception. Many Wedding DJ companies book multiple events on the same night and may subcontract to other companies using DJs with varying levels of skill. Be careful of ‘bait and switch tactics’ by making sure you evaluate the individual DJ and not just the DJ Company.”

Many great suggestions. I believe two essential Wedding Music Mistakes are omitted from the list.

1. Not hiring a Wedding DJ that offers a guarantee.

2. Hiring a Wedding DJ that is not a Multicultural Wedding DJ, if you want your Wedding Music to reflect and honor all of your family and guests.

Which Wedding Music Mishap or Wedding mMusic Mistake do you think is most important? Have you experienced any of these at your Wedding?

Mumford & Sons I Will Wait

It has taken nearly a year since its original release but Mumford & Sons I Will Wait is finally getting the commercial success it deserves!

“We wanted to do something unashamed,” says Ben Lovett. “We’re confident and happy to be where we are as a band — everything that’s happened with us has exceeded expectations, and it’s all been a surprise, it’s all much bigger than what we were prepared for. So when we came to recording this record we had a choice: to shy away from that, or to realise that people dig what we’re doing, and make something robust, with that energy.” Mumford & Sons Website

Mumford & Sons I Will Wait Critical Response

The song has received generally favourable reviews. Grady Smith of Entertainment Weekly gave the song a positive review, saying how the song “hearkens back to their Grammy-nomination-festooned single “The Cave” with its shouted refrain, triumphant horns, a driving kick drum, and an earnest lyric about a relationship so perfect it has Marcus Mumford kneeling down in reverence, raising his hands, and wishing for his mind to be “freed from the lies.”” Stephanie Middleton of The Celebrity Cafe said, “With untouched vocals and harmonies, the boys manage to create yet another genuine Mumford & Sons track.”

Katie Hasty of HitFix gave the song a B+, saying “Marcus is a softie, but he’s got a problem with repetition,” but also said “they bring it home when they jump up an octave and beat the hell out of the chorus.” She concluded with, “This song could be really huge.” Liv Carter of Urban Country News awarded the song a ‘thumbs-up’. Reviewing the song after it started receiving airplay at country radio, she called it “a perfect piece of folk-rock that more than deserves to be introduced to the wider country radio audience.” Rolling Stone magazine named the song the 13th best song of 2012.

Mumford & Sons I Will Wait Music Video

The Mumford & Sons I Will Wait Story

During the year, the band had been releasing new songs from their second album online or performing them at concerts. Marcus Mumford told MTV that the song “reflects the band’s hectic life on the road – which shaped the new album’s sound.” Ted Dwane told Rolling Stone, “Being away so much for the last couple of years is inevitably a theme on the record, because it’s something that we’ve all shared.” The song was played live in various forms through 2010-2011 under the working title ‘Nothing Is Written’.

Contemporary Hit Radio, or CHR, focuses on playing new hit songs and a limited play list. In recent years, heavily researched mass appeal oldies have joined the mix.
Modern CHR is a derivative of the Top 40 radio format that dominated the radio landscape in its heyday, the 1960s. A pure CHR format will play songs from a number of music genres including Pop, Rock, Urban and even Country. A CHR station picks the highest chart performing songs for its playlist and rotates, or repeats, the tunes in a very tight turnover that will often repeat the hottest songs every hour or two.

The Early History of the CHR Format

Early Top 40 radio, the precursor to today’s CHR format, found its foothold as TV began to dominate the media landscape and radio stations turned away from radio theater programs toward recorded music formats. Top 40 is exactly as it says it is – the top 40 hit songs of the day, targeted to a local audience. Top 40 also heralded the era of the Disk Jockey, and the local radio personality became the star along with the tight rotation of popular music. Early programming pioneers of Top 40 include Gordon McLendon, Rick Sklar and Todd Storz. The first Top 40 radio stations included, KOWH-Omaha, WABC-New York, KLIF-Dallas and KHJ-Los Angeles. Great Night at Hoboken International Film Festival

Last Thursday Night was my fourth year as festival DJ for the Hoboken International Film Festival. It was a very fun night supporting an outstanding film festival. As usual, the Hoboken International Film Festival Awards Gala was filled with celebrities, which always adds to the excitement.

Hoboken International Film Festival with DJ Mystical Michael

Along with playing a hard-driving set of 80’s Rock Music beforehand, the Hoboken International Film Festival music of choice, I played the music that each presenter and award recipient walked to and from the stage. This year, although present, Robert Loggia did not present any awards, so, the Frank Sinatra I usually play for him was left out of the night’s entertainment. His film roles include An Officer and a GentlemanMercy Mission: The Rescue of Flight 771, based on the Air New Zealand Flight 103 incident, ScarfacePrizzi’s HonorOver The TopIndependence DayNecessary RoughnessReturn to MeArmed and Dangerous, and Big (for which he won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor).

Great Night at Hoboken International Film Festival

Kenneth Del Vecchio, Founder and Chairman of Hoboken International Film Festival  entered the stage to Rush “Limellight”, which was his personal choice. The Hoboken International Film Festival Host, Gilbert Gottfried was brought to the stage by several songs, the first was Joe Walsh “Life’s Been Good”. Joyce DeWitt ran up to present awards with The Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” echoing through the beautiful, historic Paramount Theatre. She is such an amazing woman and still rocks the stage like few others. Nina Transfeld, a friend and talented, beautiful woman, bounced up to the stage with her lively presence to Queen, “Now I’m Here”. I recalled how much Nina enjoys Queen from festivals past.

Jeff Davis, lead Producer of the Film and Broadway hit, “Rock of Ages”, entered the stage to Offspring “Self-esteem” smiling from ear-to-ear. Always feels good to get a man who makes shows and films about Rock Music to appreciate your music.  Film Editor Ron Kalish was beaming as Joe Jackson “I’m The Man” filled the theatre. Rachael Robbins, Playboy model, stand-up comedian and actress, lit-up the stage with her strut to Lenny Kravitz version of “American Woman”. She is so much fun and enjoys the spotlight more than most. Michael Rivera, who does not have the same fondness of 80’s Rock Music as the rest of the team, was pumped-up when Run-DMC “Rock Box” was his selection. Robert Bogue, best known as A.C. Mallet on The Guiding Light for 338 episodes, was playing the air guitar to Heart “Barracuda” across the stage, it was hilarious!

As the night was closing, Kenneth Del Vecchio was called back to the stage to present the award for Best Narrative Film to his favorite song, another one from years past, Peter Gabriel “Solsbury Hill”. As the theater began to empty to Uncle Kracker “Follow Me”, Joyce DeWitt came to the DJ station with arms wide open offering a hug and these words to complete an amazing night, “Wow! That was the best music at any event I have ever been at! Thank you so much for making this such a great night!”. Trust me, I am one the needing to thank you Joyce for all the laughs and fun you gave me growing-up watching Three’s Company!

What is the DJ Music Chart Contemporary Hit Radio?

No matter how the industry dresses it up, the audience recognizes it for what it is “Top 40.” The term Contemporary Hit Radio or “CHR” was coined during the late 1970s, early 1980s when radio programmers perceived a backlash against Top 40. During that decade Album Oriented Rock “AOR” stations began rising to prominence on the FM dial. Top 40 was perceived as a format for AM radio. Many saw the format as restrictive and expressed a preference for the free formats that were developing on the FM band.

Programmers chose to bring Top 40 to the FM band disguised as CHR.

The basic concept behind hit music stations is quite simple: Confine the playlist to those songs that are currently the fastest selling and most popular (sales being a barometer of popularity) This is the same approach that CHR’s forerunner, Top 40 employed. (Keith 1987, p. 59) So the industry calls it CHR, while the listening audience continues to call it what it is Top 40. It continues to be popular. The basic format element of shortening the playlist to the most popular songs have spread to all other formats.CHR/Top 40 is considered the oldest format. Many argue that Middle-of-the-Road “MOR” is older. While the form of radio known as MOR/Nostalgia predates CHR/Top 40, it was not seen as a format until after the development of Top 40.

CHR/Top 40 began developing around 1955 when Todd Storz and Bill Stewart at KOWH in Omaha Nebraska (see Format Developments) noticed that patron of a local bar played the same songs over and over. COM 418 Radio Programming and Production at the University of Delaware
